How many species of plants, animals and fungi live in Leiden? Leiden is going to count species to map the state of urban nature. During Expedition Urban Nature, residents (and scientists) will count every spider, snail, mushroom or dandelion they encounter.

How many species of plants, animals and fungi live in Leiden? Leiden Biodiversity Network (LBN) calls on all of Leiden to 'hunt' for species from 25 April to 31 May and find at least 2025 species together with Expeditie Stadsnatuur. The count not only teaches us which different species live in Leiden, but also how we can improve biodiversity and thus the quality of life in our city.
Where do you count?
In streets, parks, (vegetable) gardens, at school or at home, everywhere within the city limits of Leiden. Species can be found above and below ground, on tree trunks and flower petals, but also under paving stones or on your bedroom wall. Every species in Leiden counts, except for people, pets, house or garden centre plants.
