450 years ago Leiden and surroundings fought against the Spanish for freedom. We have been celebrating this freedom together for 450 years. The Grand Parade takes you via the Relief, the founding of the University and the Masquerade to Leiden and surroundings.
The procession will be as follows:
Walking Leiden Flag
Guard of honour on parade horse
Procession of Honour
Winners of the Joppensz Prizes
During the Taptoe on October 2, three prizes and a TaptoePluim were awarded by an independent jury to associations that presented themselves most creatively to the public.
The Relief (The Beggars)
Do you hear the Spanish drums approaching, the occupier is at the gate, stay strong, brave citizen, the relief is near. The dikes have been breached, here come the Beggars! Here come the Beggars! They come to liberate us from the Spanish King. The boats are loaded with herring and white bread, the men and women are ready to fight, get ready for the final battle and celebrate the liberation with us!

Learning in freedom (Leiden University)
The university was a gift from William of Orange to the city of Leiden, in gratitude for the resistance against the Spanish. Let us take you on a journey through student life, past and present. Attend lectures, receive your degree certificate and smell the sweat room. Hora est!
The masquerade
This parade is a lively representation of the 'Leiden regions', with each part highlighting a different aspect of our regional folklore and history. From the mischievous pranks that make us laugh to the artistic pranks that inspire us.
NOTE: The Pleintaptoe, Minikoraal, Taptoe, Remembrance Service and Grand Parade can be followed live on television and the internet, on the channels and websites of Sleutelstad and Unity.
