Summer Camps for Children: Keeping Kids Engaged During the Holidays

Balancing work schedules with children’s holidays can be challenging. Finding the right summer camp can be the perfect solution. As the school summer holidays are approaching, from the 13th of July until the 25th of August, now is the best time to start looking. Whether it’s learning a language or exploring different cultures, we’ve got your covered. Here is our selection for summer camps for your children in the Leiden region in 2024.  

1. Fun and Educational English Summer Camp in Leiden  

What:  

Enroll your child in the Summer Camp in Leiden, where they will learn English in a fun and educational environment and gain confidence in using the language. This camp offers engaging English lessons alongside a variety of activities such as games, exercise, music and creative projects, ensuring a well-rounded and enjoyable experience. Each age group benefits from a customized program with small group sizes, ensuring individual attention. The camp concludes with a festive event where parents are invited to join for high tea and homemade cupcakes, celebrating children’s achievements with certificates and lively performances.  

When:  

There are two possible dates for the summer camp:  

  • Beginning of the summer holidays: 15th of July – 19th of July  

  • End of the summer holidays: 19th of August – 21st of August  

Who:  

  • Summer Camp: Children ages 4 and up; school grade 1 – 7  

  • Junior Camp: suitable for school grade 7 & 8  

  • Teen Camp: suitable for children in high school, up to age 17

2. A Summer of Fun and Adventure Awaits at Jeugddorp Leiden!  

What:  

Jeugddorp Leiden offers exciting summer camps for children aged 6 to 12. This year marks the the final summer Jeugddorp happening at the Vliet before its moving to a new location in 2025. From the 29th of July to the 2nd of August, and then from the 5th of August to the 9th of August, the camp will be held at the beloved Vliet site. The organizers are planning an extra special edition of Jeugddorp.  

Introducing the Strip Card: 

A new feature this year is the introduction of the strip card, which provides five visits to the Jeugddorp. This card is versatile and can be used for multiple children, making it easier for friends to join in the fun without needing an extra ticket for a day event.  

Activities: 

Jeugddorp offers a variety of activities designed to engage and entertain children. There are four fixed parts to the camp that kids can enjoy daily:  

  1. Hut Building  

  1. Crafting  

  1. Sports and Games  

  1. Theatre  

Daily Registration and Workshops:  

Each day, children register at the gate for one of the fixed components, or a special workshop. Workshops often have limited space, so early registration is encouraged to secure a spot. However, there is always plenty of space available for the fixed activities.  

Important Information: 

The camp runs from 9:00 to 15:30 daily. Parents are reminded to pack lunch and drinks for their children.

3. Summer Camp: Explore and Discover!  

What:  

Enroll your child in the ‘Big Ben Kids International summer camp’ in either Waasenaar or The Hague/Scheveningen, where they will embark on a journey of exploration and discovery. Throughout the summer, the camp offers weekly themes filled with indoor and outdoor activities that guarantee a full day of unforgettable fun. Children will engage in diverse activities, such as art, science, movement, drama, and much more. Visits to museums, parks, sports facilities and the beach are also included, fostering strong friendships. This camp is perfect for kids who speak English as their main language, with explanations available in Dutch if needed.  

When:  

Running throughout the summer with themed weeks starting from the 15th of July until 23rd of August.  

Who:  

Suitable for children aged from 4 up to 13 years old, with programmes tailored to different age groups. 

Activities:  

  • Forest Scavenger hunt hiding flags/ painted pebbles  

  • Playground/ animal farm visits with s’mores and burgers  

  • Visits to Hortus Botanicus botanical garden in Leiden  

  • Exploring the oriental supermarket and making fresh spring roles  

  • Visiting Omniversum for the Jane Goodall photo exhibition
