Residents of Leiden Wanted: Study on the Sense of Safety in Leiden
How safe do you feel walking on the street in Leiden? Do you feel safe, or are there situations that make you feel unsafe in the city? These are questions that city criminologist Marianne Franken of Leiden University wants to find answers to. In collaboration with the municipality of Leiden and the police, she is going to investigate the experienced safety in the city - and inhabitants of Leiden can participate!
De Leidse Stadscriminoloog is a study about experienced safety in Leiden. It is a collaboration of Leiden University, the municipality of Leiden, and the police, to create an overview of the experienced safety of inhabitants of Leiden and to consider specific approaches to improve the experienced safety where necessary. The most important goal of this study is to combine various perspectives, sources of information, and approaches, to be able to improve experienced safety in Leiden.
Three points are central to the study De Leidse Stadscriminoloog:
- Increasing knowledge about experienced safety by inhabitants of Leiden
- Where necessary, (focused) improving of inhabitants experienced safety
- Supporting a good, long-term collaboration between the municipality, the police, and Leiden University
Participate in the study
With this study, we want to get an overview of the experienced safety of the inhabitants of Leiden in the city.
The results form a measure of experienced safety in the city. ‘This study is about the inhabitants of Leiden. That's why we call on everyone who lives in the city and thinks safety is important: “Join the study because we need you”.’
Inhabitants of Leiden who want to participate in the study can fill out an online questionnaire.
Important to know:
- You need to live in Leiden to be able to participate
- You need to be at least 18 years old
- Completing the questionnaire takes around 30 minutes
- Participation is entirely anonymous, and your privacy is guaranteed
- After participating, you will be kept updated on the progress of the study. For example, there will be a presentation of the first results in July
- Would you like to contribute more to the study? You can choose to complete questionnaires more often, but this is not required
Events
From the 27th of February, Leiden University will be present on the street in the neighbourhoods of Leiden to talk about the study.
In July they will organise an event for everyone curious about the project. During this event, the first findings about experienced safety in Leiden will be showcased.
