Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) is home to 350 companies and businesses, most of which are in the life sciences sector, and it plays an important role in the employment of many internationals and nationals in the Leiden region. Indeed, approximately 1 in 8 working individuals in Leiden are employed by one of the organisations at LBSP. Although many of these jobs are targeted towards people who have a higher education background, about half of the employees at LBSP also come from other educational backgrounds, such as vocational education.
The municipality has earned approximately 4.5 million euros annually from LBSP, with much of this income being derived from property tax. The city council and the council committee regularly discuss LBSP as part of their agenda due to its key role in the Leiden region. Leiden municipality also plays an important part in balancing the different social and economic interests of Leiden Bio Science Park, ensuring the continued growth of LBSP.
